this family didn’t connect with their photographer…

…or maybe it’s because it was taken during the Great Depression and all they got to eat that day was a can of Spam and 3 potatoes…

see lots more COLOR pics from the 30’s and 40’s HERE.

Our buddy, Coley, emailed me this awesome article … because he’s sweet like that. Just amazing to see pics from this era in color. And it’s not like watching the Wizard of Oz in color because this is real life. One of the pics was even taken in Lincoln. We forget how far we’ve come as a nation in the last 100 years. Photography has, too. I’ve only shot two rolls of slide film in my life… but I can say that there is no comparison with how vibrant the colors are and how sharp the images can be. Even looking back at slides from my Grandparent’s vacations. The colors are superb and saturated.

Looking at these specific images, though, I can’t get over how grimey everything (and everybody) appears. Greasy hair, dirty feet, and wrinkled clothes. Makes me appreciate soap. And with no air conditioners or deodorant, I bet they were really stinky in summer. Yes, I think about that sorta thing. But I guess they didn’t know any different. And the dance on Saturday night was really something to look forward to. That, and where their next meal was coming from. I promise not to make fun of my Grandma for hoarding and my father in law for saving slivers of bar soap any longer. I get why they do it.

have a fabulous weekend everyone! take an extra shower for me.

I’m off to PP of N winter conference…and I’m speaking. wish me luck!
