the art of saying thanks

i remember way back when my mom would make every attempt to get me to write my thank you’s from receiving birthday gifts, confirmation gifts, graduation, etc..   i used to hate it. right now i’m picturing my 5 year old self…. my short, short hair cut, sweatpants, sitting at the kitchen table under the florescent light. stalling. making excuses. being careless and generic about how i signed my pre-purchased cards (which were just as generic as my message). but now….now i love it. i love really taking time out of my day to be thoughtful and speaking from the heart to say thank you to the gift givers in my life.

choosing a card from my stash is my favorite part (all my cards come from my aunt nancy… so creative and talented. i haven’t purchased a store card in over a year i bet!).  then sitting down to hand write a note. HAND written is something you don’t see everyday, either. i think it’s the only time i actually write anything!  when i think about it… i type my blogs…i type my emails… i type text messages… heck! i don’t even write out my grocery list. i have an app for that. haha     so if i like writing thank you’s this much… imagine how much i enjoy getting them!  it is always a highlight to get something addressed by a human, generally. a lady at my old job, Linda, gave us some great advice. she said you should make yourself a ‘feel-good’ file. every nice card you get… post it… email, whatever gives you a warm fuzzy inside, stick it in. you never know when you’ll have a terribly bad day and need to refer to this file. so true!  so if you send me a thoughtful thank you note… chances are it will be kept and stuck on my little rack. (click HERE to see how i made my rack!) and it will be re-read on a cloudy day in Stacy-land. it’s the thank you that keeps on thanking.

this rack came from the Chick Market! it was a store display that they hesitated to sell.it had the hard job of showcasing vintage hankies for sale. but after a smile and an offer, it was mine for $20. this is where cards, recipes, snapshots, etc… get hung first! to be admired daily. (the pic of the baseball boy is RYAN as a young boy. same glasses to this day, i think! haha)
