our incredible shrinking walls

New year and I’m MOTIVATED! : )

Ryan & company [usually his men-friends that can assimilate]  tease me that our rooms shrink by the year. I’m assuming an image of wall-to-wall-floor-to-ceiling collections of things is flashing in your mind right about now….now stop it.

This isn’t a post about Hoarders [which we are SO not]

What he means is that I like to paint. and often. And I guess after so many coats, yes…the room shrinks microscopically. But I like to refresh and change around things from time to time.

Hey! Don’t we all??

It’s been true for all 4 homes we’ve lived in as a married twosome.

It’s just one of those cute little quirks I have that he loves to hate.

I can’t imagine keeping the objects that we pass by on a day-to-day basis in the same place for years (our house is small, so that pretty much means every object in every room on every surface). I can admit to moving a decorative object nearly every time I dust to a completely different location in the room. Sometimes I’ll stick stuff in a box and rotate my stock every few months. Same goes for collections—I only keep some of it out and rotate it.  Also, every item we’ve acquired (via vintage shop, hand-me-down, or furniture store) goes with everything. So no matter what room or table I adorn, it all looks like it belongs. Not to say that everything is neutral; most things are classic and forgettable and some are special and WOW.

And every time I ‘restyle’ our spaces, it feels new and fresh and lovely. What Ryan doesn’t know is that this act of stirring the pot probably saves us thousands of dollars. He should probably thank me with a back rub.

Oh, honey…I only need your help moving the heavy stuff and filling nail holes, please.

So now it’s the living room’s turn to get a little make-over. And I think this makes coat of paint No. 4. (which is not bad considering the age of our home).

I know we only moved up into this space a year ago… but we’ve finally gotten around to selling our big mama furniture from our old home on Craigslist and we have lived and breathed in the space to know what our needs are: we spend about 99% of our waking leisure time in this room. It was important that we get it right.

and….

maybe it’s because I’m anxious for Spring (even though it’s still the dead of Winter) and I can’t really help in the studio construction right now….

maybe because I’m nesting (nope…not yet).
